There a three official languages in New Zealand: English, Maori and NZ Sign Language. The later two are unique to New Zealand.
This week is New Zealand Sign Language Week (13-19 May). And if, like me, you have left it too late to sign up for their popular taster classes, the Deaf Aotearoa has an online taster with a series of lessons, on their Sign Language Week website: www.nzslweek.org.nz
You may find that it is a lot easier to understand sign language than you might think, and it is perhaps one of the most enjoyable languages to participate in.
Having learnt to sign the alphabet as a kid, I was surprised to find I could still remember most of it! Now I am looking forward to learning some words and phrases.
